What is Pit & Fissure Sealants?

Explained in Simple Language

The back teeth (molars) have deep grooves and pits on their biting surface. Food and bacteria collect in these grooves very easily — even with good brushing, a toothbrush bristle cannot always reach the bottom of a groove.

A pit and fissure sealant is a thin, protective coating painted into these grooves to seal them. Once sealed, food cannot collect, bacteria cannot grow there, and cavities cannot form in that area.

This is one of the most effective preventive treatments in dentistry. It is completely painless, requires no injections, and is done in a single short visit. Sealants are especially recommended when the permanent back teeth first come in — typically between ages 6 and 12.

Step by Step

What Happens During the Visit

We explain every step to your child before doing it — so there are no surprises and no fear.

1

Clean the tooth surface

The back tooth is cleaned carefully, especially inside the grooves.

2

Apply an etching gel

A mild acid gel is applied for a few seconds to create a slightly rough surface — this helps the sealant stick strongly. The child feels nothing.

3

Rinse and dry

The gel is rinsed off and the tooth is dried completely.

4

Apply the sealant

The liquid sealant material is carefully painted into all the grooves of the tooth.

5

Set with a light

A bright blue light is held over the tooth for 20–30 seconds. The sealant hardens into a hard protective coating instantly. Done.

Questions About Pit & Fissure Sealants

Not at all. No injections, no drilling, no discomfort. Most children do not even realise it is happening. The whole procedure takes about 5 minutes per tooth.

The permanent first molars (come in around age 6) and permanent second molars (around age 12) benefit most from sealants. These are the teeth most prone to cavities because of their deep grooves.

Typically 5–10 years, sometimes longer. Dr. Sayli checks the sealants at every routine visit and reapplies if needed.

Yes. Sealants protect the grooves on the biting surface, but the sides of the teeth and the gum line still need proper brushing and flossing. Sealants are one layer of protection — not a replacement for good hygiene.

* In a review of 22 clinical trials, fluoride varnish reduced tooth decay by about 37% in baby teeth and 43% in permanent teeth (Marinho VCC et al., Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2013, doi:10.1002/14651858.CD002279.pub2). Results vary with each child's diet, brushing and cavity risk.

We use comfort-first techniques, numbing gel and local anaesthesia when needed, so most children feel little or no discomfort. Every child is different; we explain what to expect before any treatment.
